When to See an Orthodontist

When to See an Orthodontist

Orthodontics for Children

The American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that your child have an orthodontic examination by age 7, where the orthodontist will screen for a number of things that could cause future problems if left untreated. Those problems include the following:

  1. Over retained baby teeth
  2. Premature loss of baby teeth
  3. Crossbite
  4. Habits such as thumb sucking
  5. Crowding
  6. Impacted teeth
  7. Severe overbite
  8. Socials concerns

Most patients at this age will not need full braces. The majority will be put in our recall system and monitored every 6-12 months until it is time for orthodontic treatment. Most patients start orthodontic treatment around age 12.

Orthodontics for Adults

Orthodontics for Adults

Orthodontics isn’t just for kids. It is never too late to start orthodontic treatment! About 30% of our practice is adults in either braces or clear aligners. According to the AAO, about 1 in 5 orthodontic patients today are adults. Well aligned teeth are easier to clean and maintain, less subject to abnormal wear, and can boost your self-confidence!
